Unravel the Mysteries of the High Himalayas: Trek to Roopkund
Roopkund Trek, often referred to as the “Mystery Lake” by locals, is an exhilarating high-altitude glacial lake trek located in the Chamoli region of Uttarakhand. Nestled in the majestic lap of Trishul, a prominent massif in the Himalayas, Roopkund is renowned for the eerie sight of hundreds of human skeletons that lie along its shores. This uninhabited lake rests at an elevation of 5,029 meters (16,499 feet), surrounded by rocky glaciers and snow-covered peaks, making it a captivating destination for adventurers.
This shallow lake, spanning just two meters in depth, holds immense ethical and scientific significance. Researchers suggest that the skeletons found at the lake’s bottom date back to the 9th century when an Indian tribe became trapped during a catastrophic hailstorm, unable to escape its fury and remaining in the lake’s icy grip for centuries.
Additionally, folklore tells of a tribal king and his entourage, including his wife, who perished while en route to the revered Nanda Devi shrine. Caught in the same treacherous storm, their tragic fate left them as the haunting remains that still linger by the lake.
