Chopta: The Hidden Gem of Uttarakhand’s Wilderness
Chopta, a quaint hill station tucked away in the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, is a lush paradise that enchants with its rolling green meadows, dense forests, and breathtaking mountain vistas. Nestled at an altitude of 2,680 meters, Chopta is a dream destination for campers and nature lovers, providing a serene escape into Uttarakhand’s untouched beauty.
As the gateway to the Tungnath Temple, the world’s highest Shiva temple, and the Chandrashila Peak, Chopta is an essential stop for trekkers seeking spiritual and scenic splendor. Here, evergreen forests of pine, deodar, and rhododendron offer an enchanting backdrop, with vibrant wildflowers in spring and pristine snow blankets in winter.

Assemble at either Akshardham Metro Station or ISBT Kashmere gate. We start our journey towards Chopta at 8 PM. We have our dinner at a restaurant near Modinagar and then continue our drive to Rishikesh.
We reach Rishikesh by 4 AM and then take a halt there. We start our mountain drive to Chopta by 5 AM. We drive through Kedarnath-Badrinath highway and cross Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Kund. It takes around 8 hours to reach Chopta.
Chopta is a tiny hill station situated on the Gopeshwar-Badrinath road. The place is surrounded by scenic meadows and is considered one of the best places for camping in Uttarakhand. The place is also prominent for the treks to Tungnath and Chandrashila.
After arriving at Chopta, we have our lunch and then start our trek to the world’s highest lord Shiva temple, which is Tungnath. The trek from Chopta to Tungnath is 3.5 km long and the trail is made up of cemented path. It takes around 3 hours to reach the temple. After reaching there, explore the temple and enjoy the sunset. Dinner and overnight stay at Tungnath.
Wakeup early and we start our trek to Chandrashila at 5 AM. The trek from Tungnath to Chandrashila is 1.5 km long and the trail is steeper than the previous day’s trail. It takes an hour to reach the Chandrashila summit. After reaching, enjoy the panoramic views of almost all the peaks of Uttarakhand such as Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath, Trisul, Gangotri, Shivling, etc.
We start descending down at around 8 AM and reach Chopta probably by 12 PM. After having lunch at Chopta, we begin our drive back to Delhi.
Reach Delhi by 7 in the morning next day.
